Pre-requisites: First Aid is highly recommended by the HSE, but not essential.

On this course you will learn legislation specific to chainsaw maintenance and operations, how to maintain a chainsaw – crucial for the safe use of the equipment. You will be taught crosscutting techniques, and how to fell trees using a variety of cuts, followed by instruction on how to process the tree to site specification. This course is run by an approved Lantra instructor, on a maximum 4:1 ratio. The course combines instruction and practice in both the workshop and out in the woodland)

Assess tension and compression in timber

Assess the trees to be felled for hazards and risks
Fell trees
Assess leaning trees and the safest method of felling
Make accurate felling cuts
De-limb felled trees in a safe and systematic manner
Crosscut timber accurately to site specification
Safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar
Handle and stack timber using safe manual handling techniques
Safe takedown of hung up trees using appropriate equipment
